Itinerary/Excursions

Housesteads Roman Fort

Witness the stunning views, explore natural wilderness and become immersed in the history while visiting Hadrian’s Wall and Housesteads Fort. Hadrian's Wall, an epic structure, kept the unwanted out and the welcome safe. Making use of the natural Whin Sill escarpment, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is the Roman Empire’s best-maintained outpost in northern Europe.  Nestled within Northumberland National Park, it really is quite a treat. There are invigorating walks and breathtaking landscapes. Venture alongside Hadrian's Wall to Milecastle 37 and the famous Sycamore Gap, taking in the sights as you go. It's a real testament to the Romans, as well as their planning, tenacity and power. Head to Housesteads Roman Fort for a real insight into Roman military life and discover the past behind the archaeological remains, using the stone walls as a guide around the village south of the fort and envisage the different chambers and rooms. Plus, you might just see some of the oldest toilets around.   @National Trust

Vindolanda

Just south of Hadrian’s Wall, Vindolanda is one of the most important archaeological sites in Roman Britain. Excavations here have revealed exceptionally well-preserved artefacts, including the famous Vindolanda writing tablets. Visitors can explore the extensive ruins of the Roman settlement and fort, and discover its stories in the on-site museum.

Day trip to Hexham

With its historic abbey, bustling market town atmosphere, and charming streets, Hexham is a delightful destination. The magnificent Hexham Abbey, dating back to the 7th century, stands at the town’s heart, while independent shops, cafes, and a rich local heritage make it well worth exploring.

Hadrian's Wall Walk

A walk along Hadrian’s Wall offers the chance to follow in the footsteps of Roman soldiers while taking in sweeping views of Northumberland’s dramatic landscape. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is steeped in history and dotted with ruins, milecastles, and watchtowers—an unforgettable blend of natural beauty and ancient engineering.
