Itinerary/Excursions

Scarborough Castle

Scarborough Castle stands on a massive promontory of rock that rises above the North Sea. Begun by Henry II, it became one of the greatest royal fortresses in England and figured prominently in national events during the Middle Ages. Its 3000 year history and panoramic views over the coast, the castle is one of North Yorkshire's finest sites.

Scarborough Cliff Lift

The Scarborough South Cliff Tramway Company Limited was created in 1873, with the business objective of constructing a cliff lift that would link the South Cliff Esplanade to the Scarborough Spa, which at this point was the most popular music venue outside of London.  The Spa Buildings, at the foot of South Cliff, were the inspiration for building the first seaside cliff lift in Great Britain.

Whitby

Whitby is a seaside town in Yorkshire, known for its picturesque harbour, stunning cliff-top views, and historic abbey ruins.  It is split by the River Esk. On the East Cliff, overlooking the North Sea, the ruined Gothic Whitby Abbey was Bram Stoker’s inspiration for “Dracula”. Nearby is the Church of St. Mary, reached by 199 steps. The Captain Cook Memorial Museum, in the house where Cook once lived, displays paintings and maps. West of town is West Cliff Beach, lined with beach huts.

Staithes

Staithes, once a bustling fishing port, is now celebrated for its quaint streets, evocative of its rich maritime history. Its picturesque scenery of rugged cliffs and traditional cottages also serves as a serene backdrop for walking the Cleveland Way or engaging in tranquil coastal activities. For art enthusiasts and historians, the village does not disappoint—Staithes hosts an annual arts festival that showcases local talent, and its Heritage Centre pays homage to the village’s significant contributions to maritime exploration, including the early life of Captain Cook. Whether it’s soaking in the artistic legacy left by the Staithes Group of painters or unwinding in a coastal retreat, Staithes remains a timeless escape on the Yorkshire Coast.

Robin Hood's Bay

Robin Hood's Bay is a picturesque old fishing village on the Heritage Coast of the North York Moors. It is a fantastic place for adults and children alike with a beautiful sandy beach, as well as rock pools to explore and ancient fossils to discover. Wandering through its narrow, twisting cobbled streets and alleyways, you can easily imagine the sailors and fishermen, smugglers and press gangs that walked these streets hundreds of years ago. Today it is a vibrant village, with a wide range of cafes, pubs, restaurants, small shops and places to explore, as well as many stunning coastal and country walks, cycle-paths and bridleways right on the doorstep.

North Yorkshire Moors Railway

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is one of the world’s greatest heritage railway experiences with thrills and fun at its heart. Climb onboard a steam or heritage diesel train and experience 24 miles of Yorkshire’s amazing scenery at this must-see visitor attraction. Day to day operation is carried out by volunteers with railway operations and business experience. Every visitor that travels on the railway helps preserve one of the earliest and most historic lines.
