Itinerary/Excursions

Beachy Head

Beachy Head is a chalk headland in East Sussex. It is situated close to Eastbourne, immediately east of the Seven Sisters. The dramatic 530 feet high cliffs of Beachy Head give stunning views over Eastbourne and the English Channel. Walk from the foot of Beachy Head or climb to the top for dramatic views of the famous red and white-stripped lighthouse.

Bateman's NT

Bateman's is a 17th-century house located in Burwash, East Sussex.  Surrounded by the wooded landscape of the Sussex Weald, this 17th-century Jacobean house, provided a much-needed sanctuary to renowned author Rudyard Kipling and served as an inspiration for his work.  It was the home of Rudyard Kipling from 1902 until his death in 1936. The house was built in 1634. Kipling's widow Caroline bequeathed the house to the National Trust on her death in 1939. The house is a Grade I listed building.  Bateman's is very much a family home that feels as though the family have just gone out for the day

Alfriston Clergy House NT

Alfriston Clergy House was the first building saved forever for the nation by the National Trust. It was purchased in 1896 for £10. It has a pretty small garden.

Hastings

Hastings is a town on the southeast coast. It's known for the 1066 Battle of Hastings, fought on a nearby field where Battle Abbey now stands. The Norman ruins of Hastings Castle, once home to William the Conqueror, overlook the English Channel. East along the shingle seafront of Stade beach, Hastings Fishermen’s Museum and Shipwreck Museum document maritime history. The Jerwood Gallery shows contemporary art.

Shipwreck Museum

The Shipwreck Museum is an independent charitable museum in the historic Old Town of Hastings, UK. The museum has artefacts from many ships wrecked in the English Channel fr including the Amsterdam, a Dutch East Indiaman of 1749, and the Anne of 1690, a warship of Charles II.  There are also exhibits of fossils found in the local area.
