It is hard to imagine a more romantic location, a unique château bridging a glistening watery landscape. Loved and protected for centuries by women - queens and courtesans - for more than 20 years the château has been home to a floral workshop that is unique in France. For them Christmas is the climax of 3 months of research, design and creation. From Saint Nicholas Day to Epiphany the rooms, galleries, and kitchens are their palette and they ensure a new enchantment each year.
At the Royal Palace of Amboise curious visitors can discover a magnificent Neapolitan nativity scene that has pride of place in the Council Room. In an ancient setting, very in vogue in 18th century Italy, it shows scenes of daily life and the nativity story. In addition to this, different rooms feature Christmas trees decked with apples, biscuits and characters. At their bases, in the music room, you will find presents and old-fashioned toys, reminders of a magical Christmas past.
Over 40 majestic fir trees dressed in their best Christmas finery will be lighting up the alleys of Chambord in a display that Francis I would have been proud to see at his favourite Renaissance château. The fabulous parade of Christmas trees and garlands continues indoors, so don’t miss out on that, or at nightfall, with illuminations on the château’s remarkable multi-turreted facade.
Château Cheverny will be ablaze in decorations from mid-Nov. to mid-Jan. The château is heated so you’ll be snug as a bug in the rug as you wander through its many magnificent rooms, each wondrously adorned, and stop to marvel at the ‘piece de resistance’, a gigantic Christmas wreath. If you’re brave, venture outdoors to the kennels and watch the wild melee as the château’s 100 hunting hounds get fed their Christmas dinners.
Grand Hotel Tours
The Grand Hotel Tours was built in 1927 by Maurice Boille and decorated by the famous architect Pierre Chareau. It is centrally located in the Loire Valley which makes it a prefect place to visit the castles of the Loire. To preserve the Art Deco of the Grand Hotel, it was recently renovated and upgraded to 4* standard.
