York Cathedral & York Minster

The Cathedral and Metropolitcal Church of Saint Peter, commonly known as York Minster is one of the largest of its kind in Northern Europe. Since the 7th century, the Minster has been the centre of Christianity in Northern England and remains a thriving church. The ancient building is simply magnificent, from handcrafted stone to an unrivalled collection of beautiful stained glass. Visit the Treasures of the Undercroft Exhibit, and explore nearly two millennia of York's history with artefacts ranging from the remains of a Roman barracks to 1,000 year-old artefacts still used in the Cathedral today. Each will tell a different story of York's history.

National Railway Museum

The National Railway Museum is a great place to explore the past, present and future of railways. Home to iconic locomotives and fabulous collections, you can wander through the halls and discover stories about the places and engineering marvels that are behind the railways. The museum is home to world-changing inventions, like Rocket and the Japanese Bullet Train. You can also find Queen Victoria's 'Palace on Wheels', and the world's fastest steam locomotive, 'Mallard'.

Jorvik Viking Centre

Jorvik Viking Centre is one of the most popular visitor attractions in the UK, with ride transporting you through Jorvik in AD960. The 2022 winner of Visit York Tourism Awards attraction uses the latest cutting edge technology to bring the city to life with the sights, sounds and smells of the Viking age. It is the perfect way to see the history come alive, and once the ride is complete you can explore the history in the museum at your own pace. 

Clifford's Tower

Enjoy views of the lovely city of York and its historic Minster from Clifford's Tower. Clifford's Tower has sat at the heart of the city since the Norman conquest and has had many purposes over the years. It has served as a Royal Mint, a medeival stronghol and a garrison in the Civil Wars. Today, a new roof deck gives magnificent panoramic views of York's unique skyline, with its medeival buildings and Minster. Inside Clifford's Tower you will find walkways and staircases that open up parts of the tower that have been off limits for centuries, and immersive soundscapes and stories bring the history to life like they never have before.

The Shambles

The Shambles is a medeival street with overhanging timber-framed buildings, some dating back as far as the fourteenth century. Once known as the Great Flesh Shambles, it was a popular street for butchers to display their meat. Nowadays, you will still find one butcher, but the rest of the street is filled with a bright mix of mostly independent retailers. Quaint eateries and gift shops adorn the street, with the old meat hooks still hanging outside them, remembering the heritage of the street.

York Museum Gardens

The York Museum Gardens is simply stunning botanical garden, next to the River Ouse. Covering 10 acres of the former grounds of St Mary's Abbey, they were created in the 1830s by the Yorkshire Philosophical Society along with the Yorkshire Museum, which is contained within the gardens. A Gold Winner for Yorkshire in Bloom three years running, the botanical collection is spread across a number of themed borders, and has recently been updated with a Fern Garden and Prairie, Butterfly and Astronomical Borders.
