Sat on the spectacular Trondheim fjord, it is one of Norway's most picturesque towns with colourful warehouses, charming waterways and wooded hills. One of the best places on Earth to view the Northern Lights, and experience Midnight Sun in summer, Alta brings magic and culture. Nearby, the UNESCO world heritage site Hjemmeluft has rock carvings believed to date back to around 4,200 to 500 BC, which can be seen in the Alta Museum. After World War II, Alta needed rebuilding so the architecture and buildings of the Norweigan port are fairly new, however this doesn't stop the Northern Lights Cathedral being breathtaking. You can also visit the Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel, everything inside and outside the hotel is made out of ice.
Stay at an overnight port in Alta, before heading to Tromsø.
Tromsø is a delightful island city, known as the 'Gateway to the Arctic'. A major cultural hub above the Arctic Circle, Tromsø is a famous viewing point for the Northern Lights, which you will have a very good chance of seeing. The top of Storsteinen Mountain stands 420 metres above sea level. Accessible via cable car, you will see panoramic views of the stunning landscapes that surround Tromsø. Also home to many other attractions, such as Polaria, an Arctic aquarium filled wit arctic fish species and friendly bearded seals, Tromsø has something for everyone to enjoy.
The northernmost point on the Kystriksveien Coastal Route and home to the world's strongest maelstrom, Saltstraumen, Bodø has the world's densest population of sea eagles and is thus ideal for bird spotting. Stroll along the chalk-white beach with the backdrop of the summit of Mount Ronvikfjellet, or visit the bustling town centre. Bodø Cathedral and the Aviatian Museum are just a couple of the top attractions.
