Do not touch! is the warning for all visitors to the Potent Plants Garden at Torre Abbey. Inspired by the life of crime writer Agatha Christie, the Abbey’s head gardener dug deep into the murky world of poisons, antidotes and remedies in Christie’s novels and created a garden featuring a variety of interesting plants that may cure or kill depending on one’s motives. Of course, it’s not really dangerous - the garden is designed to entertain - not provide murderous opportunities… This section is only a small part of the rest of Torre Abbey Gardens.
Cockington is a quintessentially English village with Saxon origins which attracts many thousands of visitors each year. Some of the quaint thatched cottages and buildings in the chocolate box village date back to the 16th century. Cockington County Park is a beautiful mix of picturesque well-ordered garden landscapes. Steeped in history, the Manor ouse dates back to the Domesday times. Learn about the powerful Cary and Mallock families who lived in the manor house and discover links to Agatha Christie who performed here.
Opened in 1894 and located on the seafront it has exotic palms, beautiful flowerbeds, and lawns. On the sea cliffs behind are the spectacular Royal Terrace Gardens known locally as Rock Walk with amazing views of the beach and the bay. It’s a network of delightful paths with subtropical Mediterranean planting throughout.
The beautiful Babbacombe Downs has the highest promenade in England. A wide ornamental garden is laid out with the promenade, lawns and flower beds with seats and shelters that look out over the blue reaches of Babbacombe Bay. The Cliff Railway, is a great way to get down the cliff to Oddicombe Beach below.
We can visit the very picturesque harbour town of Dartmouth. Perhaps take a trip on the Dartmouth Steam Railway (additional charge).
