Travel to Lake Chiemsee by steam train. The legendary steam train dating back to 1887 whistles along the 1.8 km route from Prien station to Prien/Stock harbour. Take a seat in the original lounge car and listen to the puffing of the steam locomotive before you embark on a boat cruise. Stop on the Herreninsel which is the largest of the three main islands. Here you will visit Herrenchiemsee, a castle built by King Ludwig II, which was never completed but was intended to be a replica of the Palace of Versailles. Enjoy a tour through the castle before heading back to your hotel.
Start the day in Mozart village, St. Gilgen, before joining a boat cruise across the lake to St. Wolfgang. Once at the famous pilgrimage town, you will go to the "Zum Weissen Rossi" for coffee and cake before some free time to explore St. Wolfgang at your own leisure. Afterwards, enjoy a ride on the Schafberg Cog Railway, which dates back to 1893. The steepest cog railway in Austria, and one of the oldest nostalgic steam engines in the world, 6 kilometres is covered with 1,190 metres altitude difference in 35 minutes. You will enjoy the panoramic view of the beautiful Lake Wolfgang and the surrounding mountains that awaits you as you summit.
Visit the Salt Mines in Berchtesgaden, which have been in uninterrupted operation since 1517. Take a tour, learning about the miners life and history of the mines. After going deep down in the earth, you will then rise up to the Eagle's Nest. The road leading from Obersalzberg to the Eagle's Nest is a feat of engineering. Perched at 6.017 feet, the building was constructed by Bormann and given to Hitler for his 50th birthday and was designed as a teahouse for visiting diplomats. The Eagle's Nest remains unscathed from bombing in WW2 and has been open to the public since 1952 as a mountain top restaurant with a stunning view.
