Itinerary/Excursions

Day 1 – We meet at London Kings Cross ahead of our morning departure, settling into our seats, sit back and enjoy the scenery as we pass over Durham, the Tyne Bridges and the vast sands of the Northumberland coast. From Edinburgh the coast dominates again as we head to Aberdeen for two nights (D)
Day 2 – Today’s coach excursion heads due west through Royal Deeside to Balmoral (open until July usually) and Braemar, with gorgeous scenery of foothills and Highlands. If we time our visit right we also include a visit to Balmoral itself. (B,D)
Day 3 - Our ScotRail service from Aberdeen travels through scenic Speyside to Inverness for a free afternoon in the ‘Capital of the Highlands’. (B,D)
Day 4 – Our return coast to coast rail excursion with Scotrail takes an epic route on the Kyle Line across the Highlands to Kyle of Lochalsh, overlooking the Isle of Skye. The train glides along the southern shore of the Beauly Firth. Next up is Loch Luichart with mighty Ben Wyvis in the distance to the north, before the train heads for wild mountains and forests, with views of the great Torridon Peaks in the distance. Skirting Loch Carron we reach Plockton in its sheltered bay, a familiar scene from Hamish Macbeth and the Wicker Man, before reaching journey’s end at Kyle. (B,D)
Day 5 – Day 5 – We depart Inverness on LNER’s Highland Chieftain train, cutting through the Cairngorms en route to Edinburgh. Crossing into England, the Farne Islands tantalise off-shore, before we cross the Tyne Bridges and get a great view of Durham’s cityscape. We arrive in London in mid-afternoon. (B)
